Keti Koti at CREA

On July 1, you are welcome at CREA Amsterdam for a special gathering around Keti Koti. Together, we reflect on the history of slavery, the power of our stories, and the future we shape together. Cultural historian Jennifer Tosch (Black Heritage Tours/Mapping Slavery Netherlands) invites the audience to look beyond Amsterdam’s picturesque canals and merchant houses to uncover the hidden histories embedded within the cityscape. Drawing from years of research and public history work, she explores how wealth generated through colonialism and slavery shaped Amsterdam’s development and institutions, and how traces of exploitation, resistance, and Black presence remain visible today. This will be followed by a dialogue at the Keti Koti Table: a safe space for a facilitated discussion about our personal experiences and insights linked to this shared colonial and slavery history and its impact on our society and university.  After a ritual welcome, we will enjoy a fitting breakfast, whilst a Surinamese choir sings a selection of historical songs about slavery and freedom. Your voice and story matter; together, we can bring about change! Following the programme, there is an opportunity to join the Bigi Spikri parade towards the Oosterpark for the national commemoration and celebration, which starts at 14.00 hrs. This event is organized by CREA and  UvA's Central Diversity Office in collaboration with the Keti Koti Tafel. -- Op 1 juli ben je welkom bij CREA Amsterdam voor een bijzondere bijeenkomst rondom Keti Koti. Samen staan we stil bij het slavernijverleden, de kracht van onze verhalen en kijken we vooruit naar de toekomst die we samen vormgeven.   Cultureel historicus Jennifer Tosch (Black Heritage Tours/Mapping Slavery Netherlands) neemt je mee langs de verborgen geschiedenissen van Amsterdam. Aan de hand van plekken als de grachtenpanden, voormalige kantoren van de VOC en WIC en andere markante locaties laat zij zien hoe kolonialisme en slavernij de stad hebben gevormd en hoe sporen van uitbuiting, verzet en Black presence nog altijd zichtbaar zijn in het stadsbeeld. Daarna volgt een dialoog aan de Keti Koti Tafel: een veilige ruimte om gefaciliteerd gesprek te voeren over onze persoonlijke ervaringen en inzichten die verbonden zijn met dit gedeelde koloniale en slavernijverleden en de doorwerking daarvan in onze samenleving en universiteit.  Na een ritueel welkom genieten we van een bijpassend ontbijt, terwijl een Surinaams koor daarbij enkele historische liederen over slavernij en vrijheid zal zingen. Jouw stem en verhaal doen ertoe, wij kunnen samen voor verandering zorgen! Na het programma is er gelegenheid om mee te lopen in de Bigi Spikri optocht richting het Oosterpark  voor de nationale herdenking en viering, die om 14.00 plaatsvindt.
